1) Message boards : Number crunching : Full Node Native R WU's only running single core (Message 4624)
Posted 11 Mar 2021 by mikey
BOINC client shows that the task is using all cpu's avgailable, 3/5/8 (depending on the PC and the amout of cores I have assigned as available)

BUT. looking at task manager you can see that only one core is being used 98% of the time. I will occasionally see my 4 core CPU jump from 25% to about 33% for the task.

EDIT of Previous post.
(Did not make edit deadline so had to create new message)

BOINC client shows the task is using all CPU cores available, 3/4/8 (depending on the PC and the amount of cores I have assigned as available)

BUT, looking at task manager, only 3 instances on the client show under process tab. Only one of the processes shows any CPU usage. Normally 9.8 - 14.5% the others show 0% CPU usage. The total CPU usage for the PC never goes over 33% and that is including all background processes

Try cpu-z instead Windows Task Manager is notoriously bad at reporting things

Here is one possible place to get it:

me too!!!

My 16 thread machine is running very quietly this afternoon and upon checking the process manager your Native R v2.15.1 Application - Full Node (Cross Platform) WU are only using 1 thread instead of the Full Node of 16 it should be.

Any fix we can apply in the app_config.xml?

Mine took off using all 10 of the 16 cores I allowed Boinc to use on my Windows laptop and all 3 cores of the ones allowed on my Linux laptop. Mine are running and continuing to get new tasks all using the same settings. One idea is there are some config setting in the "computing preferences" section:

Usage limits
Use at most 50% of the CPUs
Use at most 90% of CPU time

I overwrite those on each of my pc's but if you are using website settings it could be an area to look

To some, points are more important than the results from the project.

They need more computers then!! Th problem is the people worried about stats aren't worried that the project, for the 2nd time in a week, has zero tasks to send out! I guess they only care about their past stats and not their future ones because as of right now there are NO future ones!! I would love to bring more pc's over here but with the project not having enough work I would always be running my backup projects, as would everyone else.

OK four years since Badges were first talked about so I guess the Project has decided that there will be no Badges ???

It is a shame as it is another way to get people interested in the science you are doing as it adds another competitive measure.

Hope you re consider soon.

I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of badges here too!!

If I just have an at home small gaming computer, should i even bother? I know that every little bit counts, but when I start hearing people talk about running double cpu setups it kind of makes me think I brought a trowel to a construction site littered with excavators. Also is there any fruit of labor like thing going on here? Because I'm happy to donate my computer if I'm not using it, but it'd be nice to at least know what I'm supposedly helping create.

Think of it this way...the people with 64 or more core cpu's get random units just like you do, it may take searching thru 10,000 units to find the 1 unit that has the answer to the question in it, who gets that 1 unit is purely the luck of the draw. The person with 64 cpu cores runs thru 64 workunits at once, while you run thru 1 workunit at a time, but if YOUR pc is the one pc to come up with the key to the problem, those 64 cores weren't wasted, someone had to run thru them anyway just to be sure your pc's answer WAS right!!

Oh and as far as the credits earned by those 64 or more cpu core pc's, ALL those credits and 10 dollars can get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks, BUT without the 10 dollars you are NOT getting any coffee!!

There is no new work again!!
11) Message boards : Number crunching : The Deadline is too short !!! (Message 3891)
Posted 28 Aug 2016 by mikey
That is the point.

The 5 hour deadline time causes the BOINC scheduler to preempt ALL the other tasks from other projects, and fills up all the allocated CPUs with the MM workunits. It is not that the units take all that long to process (usually no more than 15 minutes each here) but that they deliberately hog all the CPU slots and delay other project's WUs that may be due just a little after the MM stuff hits.

Also, if you watch the "remaining time" on MM WUs, they often dynamically increase their remaining time by minutes at a time during the run of a phase.
The memory footprint of the MM WUs are also quite large on the currently active method -- the "R" statistics package is not small and likes to have lots of memory.

To make the point again: MindModelling does not "play nice" with other projects; just like a schoolyard bully.

That's MUCH better than the message I got this morning say that it WON'T work on my 64 bit Ubuntu Linux pc, this DESPITE the fact that these are my stats for that pc:

State: All (55) · In progress (0) · Validation pending (0) · Validation inconclusive (0) · Valid (55) · Invalid (0) · Error (0)

I have suspended all further MM work on that pc and MM is back to being a project with a zero resource share on all my Windows pc's!!

Now it says there are almost 1000 tasks but when I try to get some Boinc says:
'Scheduler request failed: HTTP internal server error'

But my other Boinc projects are working just fine!!
