A new 1.89 Windows application was released today which removes a bug causing a workunit to possibly hang at 100% complete for up to 2 hours on some Windows systems before finishing. This improved application as already produced a 25-30% average performance improvement compared to the 1.88 application.
Also, congratulations to tempo for being the first cruncher to accumulate over 3 million credit on the MindModeling project.
Excellent!

Thanks Jack. Tasks are running great now.

I've just attached a few machines and noticed that 1.88 was downloaded.
Right? Wrong? Oops?
(running Win XP Pro & Vista).

The 1.89 application actually shares a lot of files that were used by the 1.88 application so as to minimize the bandwidth requirement needed to deploy the new application. The only file that is actually different is the wrapper executable (mm_wrapper_1.14_windows_intelx86.exe; old version is 1.13).

Fair 'nuff - that makes it clear as unto mud.
Taa muchly for the prompt reply, I'll keep on with the brain-bashing, and probably add a few more McHines.

I'm getting this error with BOINC 7.0.25 W7 64-
10/15/2012 10:42:23 AM | MindModeling@Beta | Message from server: ACT-R cognitive modeling environment leveraging Clozure Common Lisp requires 1.96 KB/sec download bandwidth. Your computer has been measured at 1.96 KB/sec.
Apparently something is blocking download of new app. Any suggestions? I dont have the fastest connection around, but it's reliable.

I recommend resetting the project /twice/
That seems to help when this issue crops up.

thanks, Jack. Ended up hosing the BOINC install upgrading to 7.0.28, had to get a copy of my installer from home to complete it. Interestingly enough, that solved the problem, MM downloaded a full queue. 1 million mark is on it's way!

While the new workunits seem to run OK, the 24 hour deadline still means they all run in high priority all the time even though there is plenty of time to finish them. This continuous high priority mode (due to the short deadline) stops other projects from running.
Also the graphics/screensaver now no longer functions. One of the things many of us liked about this project was it's graphics. Has this projects admins decided to do away with the graphics/screen saver? It was working a couple of weeks ago. |

We have an equal dose of jobs that require weeks of computations as we do jobs that can be completed within hours when massively distributed. Right now we crudely set the delay bound to 24 hours despite these differences. We'll add in some extra logic to account for this, so only the tasks that should complete quickly will be required to complete quickly.
As for the screensaver, I believe a few weeks ago we were getting error message on clients when the BOINC wrapper was failing to attach to the shared memory segment of the graphics app. Instead of repeatedly trying to access that memory segment, we added logic to "cut our losses" and move forward with the computations without the graphics. This may have had the consequence that our graphics generally don't run. We are also very pleased with out graphics app, so fixing this warrants our attention. More to come. |

Thanks Tom for the quick answer.
I've noticed these high priority modes more often with the BOINC Manager 7.X than when I used the older 6.X (which worked well). Anything with less than about 30 hours seems to set it off in high priority mode. Even when there is one hour to go on the work unit and 24 hours left on the deadline. Folks doing one or two projects don't seem to get this as often. Something in BOINC Managers scheduling. Frankly if it weren't for so many of the projects that do GPU WUs requiring 7.X, I would have stayed at 6.X which scheduled much better.
I easily managed 20 or more projects with 6.X but many projects now require 7.X. So I switched a few months ago. BM 7.X just loves to download far too much work and then to run all WUs with short deadlines in high priority mode (Mind Modeling). It totaly ignores the work limits set on a regular basis. The more projects you run, the worse BM 7.X gets. So I realize that a lot of this isn't so much your workunits as BM 7.X. Having a deadline over 30 hours or so helps 7.X cope.
Then add the frustrations with the very flawed Credit New system and it makes those same quick finishing work units nearly worthless credit rewards. Credit New is being replaced by flat rate calculations at most projects that tried it because it simply doesn't work well. It isn't fair and rewards very wacky amounts both too high and low. It was designed to make all projects reward on a par with SETI which is a very flawed mismanaged project now. Hope you reconsider a different credit system in the near future (like flat rewards for an amount of work completed). MM is not rewarding very well currently as compared to other projects for the time spent on WUs and that's probably due to the Credit New system. There are many projects that have abandoned or refuse to use Credit New.
Here's hoping you find a way to make the screen saver/graphics work. It was a nice way to show off the project. I realize we all want working WUs as the 1st priority. But if you could fix this sometime when you're not running in high priority mode, it would be appreciated by many.
Thanks to Tom and Jack and those at MM we don't see on the forum behind the scenes for the hard work you do. |

For starters, I've increased the deadline to 31 hours for all future work units that are created. This shouldn't have too great an effect on most of our jobs. And although it won't be immediate, please let us know if the problem persists after a couple of days. Eventually, we'll move to a system that can more dynamically handle different deadlines for different sized jobs.
And as for Credit New, our intention is to move away from that system as soon as we get the chance. Our research is highly benefitting from the goodwill of our volunteers, and we like to repay the favor with a reliable and fair system. |
