Hello Crunchers,

While our researchers are preparing new models to run on MindModeling.org, the MM team has decided to take some time to update and make improvements to the website. Part of this is the inclusion of a Mind Modeling banner that can be displayed at the top of our main webpage. Instead of simply making the banner ourselves, we decided to open up the design to all of our volunteers and hold a contest to select the best design. The banners will be voted on by the MindModeling team, and the winner will get to see their work displayed on MindModeling.org for at least the next year. We will keep the contest open until the end of July, 2009.

If you're interested in the contest and created a design, please post them here or send them to me via email.

Thanks and good luck!

Below are some images you can use to help make your banners:

MySpace Tom,

This is my first entry for the competition;

I don't have the time tonight but i will take some time when I'm free during the week and do some more.

It can be altered if necessary. If you don't like the statement under the "MindModeling" heading, it can be changed.

Question 1: Your news item implied that you were making more changes to the website than just the banner, what else are ye planning?

Question 2: If i designed a special set of MindModeling CSS style sheets for this website to make it look really cool, would you be interested? Jack helped me out there a while back with a particular problem. I would like to re-pay the favor. But i don't want to interfere if you guys have other plans.

Question 3: Do you guys have a preference for a particular "Theme" or set of colours you would like to see used in the logo or banner? I used red in the entry above, you might not like red.

John.

Thanks for your involvement, John. It's great to see that you're interested in contributing to MindModeling outside of crunching numbers. To answer your questions:

(1) Currently, we're looking to update the website so it's easier to navigate, easier to understand, and provide more information and functionality. We've been looking at other volunteer sites and taking ideas from them, as well as including some of our own original ideas. These include (but are not limited to): new visual design and layout, a banner and logos, job description pages, publications, technical news feeds, tutorials, and quick guides. For starters :)

(2) I think some people on our team are really interested in doing the visual redesign of the website, but no one on the team has a lot of experience with CSS. We would love some CSS templates to start with, but I can't gaurantee we'll use them in the final design.

(3) I think varying blues, blacks, and whites are a good color scheme for any logos, banners, and CSS templates, but we're DEFINATELY open to new ideas. I know there are some websites out there (can't think of any off the top of my head) that have preset color schemes for website designs.

I hope that answers you questions, and thanks again for your active participation!!!!

Oh, and I like the statement at the bottom of the banner. Maybe it could be changed, but I can't think of anything better right now.

Tom

I have a better idea now of what you guys are doing. Probably best to let you guys make the changes you want to make, then see what it looks like. When your finished with the major functional and navigation changes, if i can offer some improvement, i will.

The Docking@home project, in my opinion, has by-far done the best job of overhauling the basic boinc website; http://docking.cis.udel.edu/. They had a team of student web developers gave the website a full going-over. Contact them here. No other boinc powered project has come close to the work done on the Docking website.

I'll see if i can do some more logo's.

Thanks Tom,
John.

Tom,
As i'm the only one that has entered a banner in the competition, just to let you know, don't feel under any obligation to use that banner i made. I'm not insulted or anything like that if you make your own banner because of lack of choice.

I have not had time to make more banners so maybe its best that you guys make a banner or logo that will match whatever work you are planning on this website yourselves.

John.

We were hoping to get more activity and involvement out of this contest, but it looks like it never took off. We may try to re-initiate it in the future when we have more active volunteers and work to crunch. Thanks for your contributions!!!!

I think that would be a good idea. While there's no work, people don't come to the forum that often. I know I don't, today I just happened to be doing a chek to see what's going on here.

Will check in again sometime.
