Hello,
As many of you have already noticed, we haven't had any work in awhile. I want to emphasize that MindModeling is still an active project, but we do not have control over when the scientists and engineers submit work. This natural variation is due to the funding, phase, and nature of these R&D projects. I appreciate your patience, and understanding as we go through these dry periods.
In other news, I'm sad to announce that several of the MindModeling staff have moved on, including Jack, Nathan, and Brandon. Olivia and I have taken their roles in the project's development and operation. While our predecessors taught us a great deal before they left, we have a great deal more to learn.
Olivia and I are both very excited to continue work on the project and to improve it where possible. To that end, we will be slowly rolling out updates for our scientists and engineers, as well as to our volunteers, in the coming year. We hope that these updates make MindModeling a more useful scientific tool, and thus attracts more work for our wonderful volunteers.
In that vein, we have decided to change our name from MindModeling@Home Beta to simply, MindModeling. Having been such a long-live project, it seemed time to ditch the 'beta' description. Some code is still being updated, however. So feel free to let us know if we missed a spot. :)
Finally, we have discussed updating the volunteer homepage and forums. Beside giving the pages a facelift, we have also discussed the problem of spam, and low-participation on the forums. It seems to me, that most discussion now happens elsewhere in larger, more active forums, or in private channels. While we realize this has been a useful place to connect and report issues, moderation takes time away other aspects of our jobs. Therefore, we are considering shutting the forums down, and providing a contact email address for issues and questions. We hope that this would provide more timely and direct responses, while freeing some of our time for other work. However, as a community project, we would like to hear from you first. So please let us know what you think either on the forums, or at josh.s.ziegler+mm@gmail.com
Thank you!

Hi
Thanks for the heads up.
I sincerely hope you keep the forum "alive" simply because it is a "one stop shop" to find out the status of the project and if any issues are occuring that affect members downloading/uploading tasks.
Of course, if more tasks were available, then you'd get more interaction on the forums, esp if things stop working :-(
Of course spam can be a problem...but if you don't have the time/resources to monitor the forum, then just make it read only (and admin read/write) and just provide members with the feedback they require to successfully volunteer their computing hardware to the project.
Otherwise, with no central resource, if anything goes wrong then there's no easy way to find out when/if the project will work correctly and what needs to be done to fix things.
regards
Tim |

email sounds great instead of forums |

If by shutting down the forums you mean "no new posts" then fine as people will still be able to review the prior project discussion topics.
An email method of communication sounds fine but then I think you should say do a monthly message on the project status just so all subscribers are regularly informed what is happening with the project.
Now this may be a little off-topic and maybe I am speaking out of turn but when you have staff who need to gain experience with managing the a project how about contacting another boinc project where you have some common scientific ground and maybe sharing the load of some of their WU's. Of course you would not process the results but just upload them to the other project website. Credit would be based on the amount MindModeling would allocate and maybe all returned results except overdue would be assigned credit to simplify the process.
Anyway, just an idea, thanks.
Also, https://www.boincstats.com has placed this project into the retired category. If as you say it is still active then please contact this stats website so they can change the setting for this project. |

While I never check the forums, I look every day to see the current status, such as work downloaded, done, etc. I think the response by member Timbo has great merit. I personally have no problem with email notifications, but this is because I never go to the forums anyway. This is a project that sounded worthwhile and interesting, so I set it and forget it, as I do with all of my projects (I'm not much of a "people person"). Thank you for your decision to stick with it, and I hope we can do some more work soon! |

Now that its been 12 years since this post https://mindmodeling.org/forum_thread.php?id=30#132 was stickied and 8 years since I asked when it would stop being BETA, does it still need to be stickied? LOL
How about badges? They were requested like 6 years ago and Brandon mentioned in 2015 that they were on the list of things to do. Badges are an incentive for a lot of people. I know it is hard to earn them without work available but there are various badges at other projects based on multiple factors. Run time, Total complete work units, Points, Beta tester, finding specific results like primes or amicable numbers, finding results within a specific month, etc... A lot of projects have even let the volunteers design the badges that were used.
I would say that if moderating the forums takes away too much, then why not go the route other projects have and enlist interested users as moderators? Users can DM a mod to remove spam which should send them an email to take notice.
I also agree that if there was more work (let's face it... over a year?) that more people would be interested and commenting in the forums. However, even if more people were commenting in the forums, you really need someone from the project to interact upon occasion. Brandon tried doing that after others had left. We get there may not be loads of people lined up to submit work. However, this project hasn't really been real informative about who these people submitting work are or where all that science has wound up. With such limited amounts of work, have you ever considered working with another project to have them host instead? That way you can submit work as you get it and someone else manages the server and forums? There have been umbrella projects for a while and I'm sure some of them wouldn't mind helping out.

Coleslaw,
Now that its been 12 years since this post https://mindmodeling.org/forum_thread.php?id=30#132 was stickied and 8 years since I asked when it would stop being BETA, does it still need to be stickied? LOL
Point taken on the Beta post. I removed the sticky flag on it, and I previously removed the "Beta" bit from the project a few months ago. There are still one or two places that I need to update.
How about badges? They were requested like 6 years ago and Brandon mentioned in 2015 that they were on the list of things to do...
I'm sorry to hear that your feature request has been languishing for so long! The previous managers (e.g. Brandon) have moved on, and when I was brought on, I think this is one of the items that got lost in the on-boarding shuffle. At the moment, my main concern is updating, fixing and modernizing the project. The next most important priority for me is to attract more scientists and engineers so that we can keep work in the pipleline. That said, I created a feature request ticket for badges! I just can't say that I'll be able to get to them anytime soon.
I also agree that if there was more work (let's face it... over a year?) .. .
I hadn't considered asking for volunteers to moderate the forums, and wasn't aware of the umbrella projects you mentioned. So I'll consider and look into both! On the work front, we've had a smattering of work this year, including one scientist who has been doing short baseline runs. After he completes the initial tests and base-lining, there should be plenty of work for a month or so.
Thank you for your feedback and suggestions! |

I'm glad to see project is live again. I started BOINC journey with this project but hadn't had much chance to contribute to this project.
I would focus on project and steady flow of WU and not worry about badges if I were you. For example Einstein and LHC don't have badges, yet, it doesn't stop user to crunch for those projects. |

Glad to see some work available. I will 2nd Coleslaw's request for badges (and all you have to do is look at our signatures to see why :) ), but I'm fully aware you have other priorities at this time. We're a patient lot :) Rather have a project w/o badges than no project at all!

I'll second that thought. Glad to see some activity here.
