1) Message boards : Number crunching : The Deadline is too short !!! (Message 3943)
Posted 15 Oct 2016 by Jacob Klein
The admins have .... continued to make mistakes with deadlines, and not offered more transparency on what causes the mistakes. I had previously tried to work with them, to solve the problems, but they continue to make them. Another "oops, fixed again" over and over and over.

I've given up hope, and have set "No New Tasks" for this project. I'd love for an admin to open up, explain the problems, explain what is being done to fix them, and convince me that the project can play nice with other projects.

Ridiculous deadlines by this project, causes real problems, when trying to keep GPU resources utilized, when attached to multiple projects. I wish the admins understood that better, and cared about it more. Until then, "No New Tasks".

This is not about how long they take.

This is about having ridiculous deadlines, that interfere with the BOINC scheduler, which can end up putting MindModeling tasks as high-priority (scheduled in front of everything else), and leaving GPUs idle as part of the fallout.

I have set "No New Tasks" for this project. The admins keep making the same mistakes, and there is no sense of "normal".

Would love to help, but not if it puts my GPUs idle. Please fix, permanently, and define your fix, so we can call you out when it goes wrong.

What is the minimum deadline that we can expect for all future jobs for this application?

The answer to that question, will determine whether I can allow new tasks or not.

I noticed some of the wu yesterday were marked with 5-day deadline, but most of them are still six-hours. I thought they have made the changes for good :/

Nope.

Per this message:
https://mindmodeling.org/forum_thread.php?id=1024&postid=3638
... they still have tasks with deadlines tighter than 5 days, which then preempt tasks from other projects and tasks that run on GPUs.

Since I prefer to keep my GPUs busy, and since they haven't separated the tight-deadline-tasks into their own application that I can disable, then .. I have no choice but to set this project for No New Work.

Brandon,

I don't think you understand another one of the issues that has been reported previously*, regarding short deadlines. Please read this.

The tasks that have quick 5-6 hour deadlines, are causing all of my GPUs to go idle, because I am attached to 50 other projects, and your super-fast-deadlines cause BOINC to think that your project's tasks need to be ran immediately (they go into "earliest-deadline-first" panic/priority mode, and get scheduled ahead of my GPU tasks).

I don't want my GPUs to go idle like this, but I do want to help your project.

What you should do is have a 5-day deadline for most tasks. And then any other tasks that need faster deadlines should be in their OWN APPLICATION. That way, users who want to skip the fast-deadline tasks, can edit their MindModeling project preferences to not get tasks from that app.

Without such a feature, then I must set your project for No New Tasks, and stop helping, for my hosts that have GPUs. You give me no choice.

I highly recommend you separate the fast-return tasks into their own application. I've mentioned this several months ago, and you seem to gloss over my recommendation, sadly.

Kind regards,
Jacob Klein

Thanks Brandon.
7) Message boards : Number crunching : Tasks at 100%, but not doing any processing; wasting CPUs! (Message 3553)
Posted 25 Aug 2015 by Jacob Klein
Today I aborted several MindModeling@Beta tasks that indicated that they were 100% complete, with no checkpoints, and still running in BOINC (allocating CPUs), but Task Manager showed that they were not doing any processing. I believe the tasks were from app: ACT-R cognitive modeling environment using Clozure Common Lisp (Cross Platform) v2.32 (sse2)

This is unacceptable, because your project was essentially wasting (stealing) the resources that BOINC allocated to it, and I couldn't do work for my other 20+ projects. You left the CPUs idle. I hope you get it fixed.

In the meantime, in order to keep my computers' CPUs busy, I'll be setting No New Tasks for your project.

Good luck,
Jacob

Admins:

This issue bit me again. I got a bunch of 18-hour-deadline tasks, and they ran high-priority making my GPUs go idle.

Would the admins please consider placing the tight-deadline-tasks in their own application, so that I could use web preferences to not get that type of work?

Without such an option, I'm considering just setting the project for No New Tasks, because I do not want my GPU resources to go idle like this.

Thoughts?

Regards,
Jacob

All I did was propose what I thought was a good idea. :) I obviously want to continue to work with this project, but I also want to keep my GPUs from going idle; it seemed to me that separate apps might alleviate the problem, if it's not too difficult to set up.

Thanks.

Any chance you could separate these a bit, so they are 2 different apps, so users could elect not to receive the short deadline app/tasks?

That's what I think might work best.

Still a problem, happened again.
Would appreciate 5-day-deadlines if possible.

Thanks.

I reported an additional issue at the bottom of the "Request: Increase the Deadlines!" thread. https://mindmodeling.org//forum_thread.php?id=667&postid=3377#3377
I hope you can resolve it too.

This problem has started happening again - I just got MindModeling tasks that had a 1-day deadline, which caused them to run in earliest-deadline-first (high-priority) mode, which forced all of my coprocessor (ASIC/GPU) devices to go idle.

Your deadlines are causing problems.

Is it really necessary to have 1-day deadlines? Could you please consider something more appropriate, like 3-days or 5-days, so that our coprocessor devices do not go idle?

This is a serious issue for me, and your project is the only one causing it, of all 30 I'm attached to.

Please fix this, if possible.
14) Message boards : Number crunching : Model Solver popups, while BOINC runs task (Message 3374)

For reference, I believe these popups are occurring when the task is started, not when the task is completed.

I hope the developers can fix it!!

The window is called:
Model Solver: HumMod - Integrative Biomedicine (v2.0.38)

Can an admin look into why this is not being suppressed?
16) Message boards : Number crunching : Model Solver popups, while BOINC runs task (Message 3358)
Posted 10 Feb 2015 by Jacob Klein
When BOINC is running tasks for this projects, on my Windows machine, I am getting a "Model Solver" popup window, with status "Parsing done."

Is this supposed to be happening? It seems like incorrect, and it is also highly annoying/irritating. Thoughts?
17) Message boards : Number crunching : "Project web pages" links (in BOINC Manager) are not correct (Message 3243)

Actually it's working fine for me now. All I did was click Update, wait about 2 minutes, then all was good. So, detaching is (as I suspected) unnecessary.

Thanks!

Is there any way to get the update without detaching? Maybe this is an opportunity to make this type of update work better (ie: report issue to BOINC devs)
19) Message boards : Number crunching : "Project web pages" links (in BOINC Manager) are not correct (Message 3231)
Posted 7 Jul 2014 by Jacob Klein
When I click the project from the Advanced View of BOINC Manager, and then click all of the "Project web pages" buttons, I get taken to:

"Home Page": https://mindmodeling.org/
"Message boards": http://mindmodeling.orgforum_index.php/
"Your account": http://mindmodeling.orghome.php/
"Your tasks": http://mindmodeling.orgresults.php/?userid=4681

The last 3 of those URLs do not load properly, as they are invalid (look carefully).

Could you please fix this?

Have a look at this task:

It completed in 7 seconds, which seems illogical.

Did it do something wrong?
